]]>The company is also implementing a new sales model for its e-bikes supporting independent dealers rather than selling direct-to-consumer or through major retail chains and websites as it does with its other product offerings.
“We’re committed to entering the e-bike market in a big way and doing it right,” said Nick Howe, head of e-bike. “This means doing something new and different with both our products and our sales model. We see an opportunity to redefine the e-bike and micromobility product categories and return to a true dealer-centric sales model in the process.”
Howe, who joined Segway in the summer of 2024 and was tasked with building out the division, has more than 25 years of experience in the bike industry, including as the executive director of Orbea and global brand director of Trek and has owned and operated several bike shops in Colorado.
“Segway recognized that the bike industry is a different animal,” he said. “And senior leadership knew that we were going to need a talented team with experience in that world to be as successful with e-bikes as we are with our other product lines.”
Howe tapped Heather Henderson as senior brand manager and Sophie Eaton as sales operations director. Henderson’s resume includes senior product manager and marketing roles at Trek, Cannondale and Cervélo Cycles, and she has also owned and operated her own bike shop. Eaton has senior sales experience with HLC, Cinelli Bicycles, Giant Bicycle and Clif Bar.
For its new e-bike division, Segway aims to grow a national dealer network in the U.S. The brand will be focusing on independent bicycle dealers (IBDs), electric bicycle dealers (EBDs) and what it is calling “other bicycle dealers” — shops that may not be bike-specific, but are a good fit for its e-bikes such as motorcycle, powersports and outdoor retailers. In addition to purchasing directly through dealers, customers will be able to buy e-bikes on Segway’s website and have them shipped to a local dealer of their choice. Receiving dealers will still earn margin on these “online to offline” purchases.
“These are awesome machines,” said Howe. “But they’re also very sophisticated and technical. We want to ensure the customer has the best experience possible, and that means professional assembly and service. It also gives us a great opportunity to support the dealers who are the backbone of the bicycle industry.”
Howe promises competitive retail pricing, industry-leading margins and exceptional retailer access to parts, service and support to help achieve the latter. That access includes Segway’s new Xchange app which will be available on Apple’s App Store and Google Play. The Xchange app is a user-friendly, all-in-one mobile version of the Segway dealer portal designed to help retailers easily manage inventory, orders, warranties, test rides, service and more. Managers and employees can access their store functions through admin and employee logins from individual mobile devices seamlessly from any location.
Segway has already begun signing up core dealers in key regions across the U.S. with the goal of establishing a national network by early 2025, with further growth to follow. In order to accomplish that goal, Howe and Eaton have assembled a national sales team with extensive bike-industry experience.
Christopher Rubin serves as U.S. inside sales manager. U.S. regional sales managers include Gavin Hayes, Chandler Head, Paul Middleton, David Bell and CJ Bradbury.
Interested dealers can contact salesteam.ebike@segway.com.
Also joining Segway’s U.S. e-bike team are Erica Boyd as dealer support manager, Sarah Courtney as senior product manager, Suzy Sommer as digital marketing manager and Nate Werner as retail marketing manager.
Segway’s first two e-bikes will feature what the brand calls the “Segway Intelligent Ride System,” which promises industry-leading technology that the company says has more in common with modern cars than other e-bikes.
“In many ways, we’re a technology company first,” said Howe. “Product conversations start with discussions of ‘tech stacks’ and expand from there. We are using our technology to create a more seamless user experience much like what has been done with automobiles.”
In addition to advanced smart tech and features, the company says to expect category-leading safety and performance; its Xyber will be capable of more than 100 miles of range on a single charge in its dual-battery configuration, and the Xafari will be able to go 88 miles before needing to be plugged in.
Howe added, “These are two incredible, yet very different, bikes, and this is only the beginning. We can’t wait to show you what else we have in store for 2025 and beyond.”
Full specs, details and pricing for the Xyber and Xafari will be announced during CES 2025. Pre-orders open here and through select dealers on Jan. 7, 2025, with expected Q1 delivery.

]]>Fast forward 60 years, after battery technology evolved to make lightweight, battery powered motors reliable and cost-effective, and the next step was the e-bike: a two-wheeled machine with pedals and a small electric motor. The modern e-bike appeared during the 1990s. Acceptance in the U.S. grew slowly until the COVID-19 pandemic led to skyrocketing sales.
The e-bike market has continued to grow, in part due to encouragement by different governmental entities. For example, in addition to rebates, California has recently opened some scenic trails to e-bikes where motorized vehicles were previously banned. In response, manufacturers have designed a wide variety of off-road and dual-sport e-bikes, which dealerships like Stealth Tahoe sell and rent, offering select brands built for a wide variety of surface conditions.
Stealth Tahoe is a standalone e-bike dealer, rental agency and repair shop, started in 2016 by partners Aaron Vacek and Anthony Zingaro in Truckee, California, a small town bordering the resort area of Lake Tahoe. Tahoe is a destination for four-season outdoor fun. Winter is skiing, snowmobiling and snowboarding. Spring and fall are fishing and trail riding seasons, and summer is the beach. Stealth Tahoe is busy three seasons out of four and recently started selling Moonbikes, an e-bike for the snow. It has less power than a snowmobile but is legally able to go many places in the Tahoe area where snowmobiles are banned.
The company started as a way for Vacek and Zingaro to spend more time in the mountains. Both were unhappily working at desk jobs and were spending all their free time in outdoor pursuits. In 2015, they hit on the idea of opening an e-bike retail outlet. It took a year to finalize the business plan, locate a store to rent and acquire inventory. The whole endeavor was self-financed.
“No one thought we were going to make it,” Vacek says. “When we both got laid off, we decided to go all in. Early autumn used to be our slow season, but we are so busy we haven’t been able to work on any of our off-season projects.”
One of the problems the duo encountered when they first opened was finding the right product for their area. Some brands don’t do well in mountainous territory, and the Truckee area is full of elevation changes. Vacek explains that most of their customers are either people who live in the area year-round or have vacation homes in the area. The average income in Truckee and Tahoe is quite high, and potential customers are willing to pay for the right product.
The city of Truckee has built a network of paved bicycle trails, and as a result, many people find that it is faster for kids to get to school and parents to get to work on an e-bike. The small machines have become so popular that the local police hold educational classes at schools on e-bike laws and safety. Vacek and Zingaro tried several different manufacturers, with limited success. Eventually, the partners encountered the SUPER73 brand at an event, decided to trial their products in 2017, and found that SUPER73’s were what customers were looking for.
“They sold faster than anything,” Vacek notes. Since then, Stealth Tahoe has started retailing non-street-legal dirt bikes made by E Ride Pro and Stealth Electric (a manufacturer not connected to Stealth Tahoe), RAD cargo and utility bikes, and Moonbikes.
Despite the concerns of some motorcycle dealers that electric vehicles will limit the profitability of the service department, the service department at Stealth Tahoe is a major profit center.
“We replace tires and brake pads and troubleshoot the electrical system,” he says. “Fifty percent of what we do is repairs to the chassis and 50% electrical. Customization is big — people want modifications to the brakes, controls, suspension and chassis.”
Interestingly, e-bike rentals are not an important part of the business. “Our primary customers are local. We do get some out-of-towners who want to spend a morning riding around, and we also rent to people who’s own bike is going to be in the shop for a while.”
Stealth Tahoe has found that the best advertising for the company is social media. “We built our name on word of mouth and good online reviews,” Vacek says. “Most people find out about us on social media.”
Vacek carefully tends social media and ratings sites, thanking people who post positive reviews and trying to resolve any complaints. The Facebook page is updated often. A frequent theme is family fun, with photos of attractive, young couples taking their toddlers for a spin.
“Stealth Tahoe is growing fast and wants to expand. The partners are exploring several possibilities, including hiring employees, opening a satellite store and setting up franchises. The sky is the limit in their eyes.
At this point in time, e-bikes are much more popular than electric motorcycles and probably exceed electric cars in sales. Vacek points out that the limited success of electric motorcycles can be traced to the lack of range and the lengthy charge times. He feels electric motorcycles and cars will increase in popularity once charging times decrease and range increases. With present-day technology, an e-bike is a practical vehicle for people with relatively short commutes. The small battery on an e-bike can be removed from the vehicle and charged at a desk while the owner is at work. An e-bike is relatively inexpensive and can legally go on bike paths and other places that a car or traditional motorcycle cannot go. The parking lots at the Truckee middle school and high schools are filled with e-bikes.
“The trend is to restrict gas power,” Vacek says. “The kids are learning on what they are going to be able to ride when they are older.”

]]>The post 2025 Kawasaki Elektrode 20 and 20FS appeared first on Motorcycle & Powersports News.
]]>Young riders will be drawn to the Lime Green paint, motocross-inspired graphics and number plate, excited at the chance to ride a machine inspired by professional riders. Parents will appreciate Kawasaki’s hallmark build quality apparent in the machine’s meticulous fit and finish, alongside convenient features like the powerful motor, selectable power modes and integrated battery. For riders progressing from the Elektrode balance bike, the familiarity of its appearance combined with the thrilling power boost and ideal size will be a slam dunk. Its compact size allows for easy portability, fitting snugly into cars, trucks or SUVs, and in addition to being available at Kawasaki dealers, models can be purchased directly from Kawasaki.com.
The 2025 Elektrode 20 provides fun and exciting power output for quick and aggressive acceleration and top speed. Featuring a 750-watt electric motor that’s located in the rear wheel, the Elektrode has plenty of power while maintaining a low center of gravity and ideal balance for light steering and feel and easy turning and leaning. The motor itself is completely sealed with no external moving parts, helping to prevent water from making its way inside and increasing durability. Its quiet electric operation helps maintain a non-intimidating package.
The Kawasaki Elektrode 20 is the perfect option for long periods of fun thanks to a long-lasting, in-frame, lithium-ion battery. On a single charge, the bike can run for approximately one hour on High mode or up to three hours in Low mode, depending on conditions, and only takes four hours to fully recharge. The Elektrode 20 features an auto-sleep feature that shuts off the power after 10 minutes of inactivity, helping to preserve the battery’s charge. Since the battery lives within the aluminum frame, it is ultimately protected from dirt, dust and rocks during use. The frame also helps protect the battery from potential damage caused by falls or hard use, adding to the overall lifespan of the battery.
The battery can be charged using a provided charging cable that easily connects between the front of the bike and any home outlet. It can also be charged from a car, camper or side by side vehicle.
Like the original Elektrode, riders can select from three speed modes to suit their skill levels or riding conditions. The speed modes can be selected using the LCD screen located on the handlebars, making it quick and simple to switch between modes. Each mode caps the electric bike at a specific speed: low at 13 mph, mid at 24 mph with gentle acceleration and high at 24 mph with quick acceleration. In order to change modes, the bike must be completely stopped.
The Elektrode 20 is built with the same quality that Kawasaki vehicles are known for. A lightweight aluminum frame provides the durability a rider expects while remaining light for easy handling. A highly rigid mountain-bike style steel front fork adorns the front of the bike, which grants riders a solid feel and two inches of travel; 160-millimeter front- and rear-mounted mechanical disc brakes provide ample stopping power at the pull of the levers, giving riders a stable, easy-to-use brake that can match the units power output and speed.
To keep the Elektrode 20 light and sturdy, Kawasaki designed special 20-inch spoked wheels which suit more mature riders. An aluminum front hub was also utilized, providing extra durability and increased bump absorption that contributes to the rider’s comfort. The wheels come outfitted with knobby, tubed tires, providing excellent traction on various surfaces.
This machine is designed to accommodate riders weighing up to 132 pounds and has an adjustable seat height varying from 21.7 inches at its lowest to 27.3 inches at its highest. It has a universal riding position like a regular bicycle and even comes with rotating bicycle-style pedals that provide an extra level of freedom for a wide range of riding positions and styles. The pedals fold inward if they make contact with the ground and are spring loaded to snap back into place once the obstacle has been cleared. The handlebar design contributes to an upright riding position, which allows for plenty of room for the rider’s knees, and the handlebar and seat component sizes are common with many standard bicycle parts for those looking to customize the fit, feel and appearance of their Elektrode 20s.
Inspired by the KX motocross motorcycles, the Kawasaki Elektrode 20 is designed to look like a full-fledged off-road machine. A KX-inspired front number plate adorns the front of the unit, and the iconic Kawasaki Lime Green coloring and racing-inspired graphics that match the popular off-road motorcycles makes riders feel like they are on a bike similar to those ridden by pros. The smooth, clean lines contribute to the bike’s simple and sporty looks.
The Elektrode 20FS is built from the same platform as its Elektrode 20 counterpart but tailored for riders seeking a blend of style and functionality reminiscent of a bicycle motocross (BMX) bike. Its compact size and powerful electric motor make it accessible for those craving an exhilarating ride, with a potent output that caters to a range of riders. This bike promises a smooth and manageable performance, perfect for playful riding, and it’s crafted with Kawasaki’s renowned precision and durability. Sporting BMX-inspired features like high handlebars and a rigid front fork, the Elektrode 20FS appeals to any urban sports enthusiast.
Built with the backbone of the Elektrode 20, the Elektrode 20FS shares most of the same great features. Separating the Elektrode 20FS is a highly rigid steel front fork that provides a solid feel and precise control, similar to what a rider will feel on a BMX bike. The seat can be adjusted between 23.4 inches at its lowest point to 30 inches at its highest point and can withstand riders weighing up to 176 pounds. BMX-style tires offer riders excellent grip on both the hard and soft terrain, and the simple BMX-inspired styling makes the Elektrode 20FS stand out amongst the crowd. The front of the Elektrode sports a more square shaped BMX-style front number plate, and the subtle color of the paint blends it perfectly into the urban scene. Graphics are included but are packed separately in the box so riders have the option of applying them or using their own to suit their needs.
*Top speed and running time varies based on battery age, charge and the number of charge cycles it has had, rider weight, speed, and riding conditions.
